The 2022 Wild Sauvignon is always sensitively constructed, standing out as one of the most successful whites of this tricky vintage. Wild fermented in barrel and left on lees for 11 months, this is layered, detailed and textured. It may not have the intensity nor persistence of the superlative 2021 vintage, but it does have a delightful mid-palate feel and fine linearity. The 2022 is nuanced and aromatic, with flavours of blackcurrant, nectarine and white flowers combining with flinty reductive notes and nutty characters. I can see this improving with some bottle age, but I'd happily drink it now.

Greywacke, Marlborough Wild Sauvignon 2023, New Zealand

Openly aromatic with both classic Sauvignon Blanc fruit – grassy and herbal with a hint of cassis leaf – but also a creamy/mealy impression allied to a stony note. Unusual combination of creamy and mineral with the merest hint of oak spice. Lovely texture from the lees and the oak, gently chewy, rich, still very youthful and fresh and with a salty aftertaste. This is a wine that you can enjoy now but which ages very well.

Showcases Marlborough's finest.
Greywacke is the Marlborough wine label of the Judd family & the name of New Zealand's most abundant bedrock. Established in 2009, Greywacke's minimal-intervention winemaking celebrates season and place, producing wines with personality & individuality.
Its trademark fleshy texture and crisp acidity lead to a long, elegant finish with hints of elderflower and flinty minerality.
"Distinctive, aromatic and complex, with honeysuckle, candied ginger and a drizzle of wildflower honey. Reveals ripe melon, dried fennel and yellow apple notes that mingle with marmalade, tangerine and a touch of mango on the juicy finish." – Wine Spectator (93 points)
James Suckling scores it 94 and says, ‘Lots of character to this, with apples, pears, popcorn kernels and blanched nuts. It’s medium-bodied with delicious fruit and a flavorful finish. A serious savuignon blanc for chardonnay lover. Flinty and reductive at the end.’
