Tolpuddle Vineyard has earned its reputation as one of Tasmania’s most important wine sites, producing Chardonnay of rare finesse, purity, and international acclaim.

Planted in 1988 and purchased by cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW in 2011, the vineyard sits in the cool, dry Coal River Valley. Its north-facing slopes and natural rain shadow create the perfect conditions for slow, even ripening – giving the fruit remarkable intensity and balance. Under the guidance of winemaker Adam Wadewitz and viticulturist Murray Leake, Tolpuddle has been carefully re-trellised and replanted, refining the site into a benchmark of cool-climate excellence.

The Chardonnay is renowned for its precision and poise. Expect lifted aromas of lime, green apple, and citrus blossom, layered with savoury notes of biscuit and struck flint. On the palate it is elegant yet powerful, carrying a long, mineral finish that speaks clearly of its Tasmanian origin.

Recognition has been swift and consistent. Tolpuddle Chardonnay is a three-time winner of the prestigious “Frankie” Trophy at the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards – the only wine ever to achieve this. Most recently, the 2025 vintage was named Champion White Wine at the International Wine Challenge, repeating earlier triumphs in 2018 and 2020.
